The President's Impeachment Procedures Sabotage Georgia's European Integration Process

18 October, 2023

The Georgian Parliament is in the midst of considering the impeachment of President Salome Zurabishvili. The proceedings have been set in motion by the ruling party, alleging that President Zurabishvili's meetings with high-ranking officials from European states and the European Union were conducted without prior consent from the government, thus constituting a violation of the Georgian Constitution.

It is widely known, both within the public and among European partners, that President Zurabishvili's visits were aimed at advancing Georgia's European integration. Consequently, we are deeply concerned that the ruling party's decision to pursue impeachment proceedings against the President could have a detrimental impact on Georgia's most critical European integration efforts, particularly as the country eagerly awaits the European Commission's assessment for attaining EU candidate status.

The impeachment process could be perceived as a deliberate attempt to sabotage this crucial integration process, especially given the ruling party's substantial control over state institutions. We urge the members of the parliament to prioritize the national interests of Georgia and its citizens, refrain from supporting the impeachment of the President, and avoid jeopardizing the ongoing process toward attaining EU candidate status.
