The Coalition gives a positive assessment to the meeting of the Prime Minister and the President of the Supreme Court

07 March, 2013

The Coalition for an Independent and Transparent Judiciary is responding to the meeting of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the Prime Minister of Georgia, and Konstantine Kublashvili, the President of the Supreme Court of Georgia. We give a positive assessment of this meeting and think that it is a step forward in the formation of an independent and effective system of justice in Georgia.

We believe that the said meeting is an important pre-condition for smooth implementation of the justice system reform in the country. We also think that this process requires the maximum involvement of the judiciary so that the reform will be completed effectively. We believe that the reform of the judicial system should not take place in a conflict-ridden environment and without the participation of stakeholders, because the public is mainly interested in the formation of an impartial and effective judicial system.

The Coalition for an Independent and Transparent Judiciary has also talked about the necessity of constructive cooperation before. We welcome the statement of both parties about the significance of the judicial reform, as well as the fact that the parties agree on the majority of issues, which will also be an important signal for the Venice Commission, considering that, in the nearest future, it is set to submit its own recommendations to the public regarding the draft law prepared by the Ministry of Justice of Georgia with the aim of reforming the judicial system.

We believe that today the parties have acted in the interests of the public and the country. It is important that this process continues in the future. In its turn, the Coalition for an Independent and Transparent Judiciary hopes to get actively involved in all the initiatives and processes that will contribute to the formation of the independent and transparent judiciary and to the establishment of the rule of law in the country.
